Beach Sunrise

I love the beach in the fall. Actually, I love the beach all the time! I was fortunate to be able to spend a weekend at Topsail Island, NC at the end of October and it was just beautiful. I got up around 6am and took my camera and 85mm out for a walk. Just before the sun peeked over the horizon, I scared a couple dozen sea gulls away (not my intention, but pretty!)

Dawn is always a bit magical, don’t you think? Not only because it bathes everything in a cool, blue hue, but because of how still, calm, and quiet it is. I’m always amazed at how quickly the sun rises in the sky once it finally makes its appearance. I am not a morning person by nature– getting up before dawn is something I rarely did before I had children. But I have never regretted the effort it takes to meet the sunrise; it is always, always worth it.

I planted some lantana bushes back in 2009 and they have come back year after year. Though technically an annual plant, our climate is warm enough for them to survive the winter. They are always the last plants to in our yard to sprout up each spring, and I am always so glad to see them reappear. They attract butterflies like you wouldn’t believe! It’s not uncommon to see a couple dozen butterflies fluttering about, landing on the yellow-orangish petals. Jeremiah loves running about and chasing them. It’s just one of those things that makes this mama’s heart feel full to overflowing.

Fuquay Varina, NC Photographer | {Summer is Here!}

Whew! We made it– another winter is over and summer is finally here! School is winding down, the days are getting longer, and (best of all) there is so much light! The trees are leafing out and flowers are in bloom– that Carolina blue sky that I love so much greets me most days. But even rainy days are okay in the summer, as playing in the rain becomes an honest-to-goodness pastime around here.

I am so, so thankful for the summer ahead. We’ve got quite a few projects planned here at the Holm household, but I know there will be plenty of playing thrown in, too. And for that, I am unspeakably grateful.

As a way to kick off the summer, I will be running a sale on my Fine Art Prints through June 30, 2013. Buy any two prints (any size!) and get a free 8 x 10 or 8 x 12 print when you use the code “SUMMER2013” Also, shipping is free when you spend $50 or more! Here’s to a fantastic summer, friends!

Fuquay Varina, NC Photographer | {Blog Circle}

A few years ago I “met” some wonderful ladies who love photography at least as much, possibly even more (!), than I do. We all took an online class together through Clickin’ Moms. Since that class ended, these women have become a huge part of my photography journey. I have learned so much from them and they continue to be one of my biggest sources of encouragement.

Several of us have started a monthly blog circle where we plan to share different things we’re working on. This month’s theme is Composition. In all of the following images I was working on using my backgrounds (negative space/depth of field) to isolate the subject. I was also playing with color as a composition tool. Be sure to click through to the next blog at the bottom of the post!
